Creating jobs to restore families
May 5, 2020
Even with the many jobs created by tourism in Roatán, deep generational poverty still abounds.
One of the factors that contribute is how most business owners don’t provide a living wage to their employees. To work construction all day in the heat often pays $30 or less for the day.
But because it is an island, everyday commodities like gas, electricity or food are more expensive than they would be in more developed countries. This means just getting to and from work erodes much of their earning potential.
It’s even hard for those who live on the east side of the island, which is both poorer and further from most jobs. Many in those communities don’t feel the jobs are even worth it because of how little is left at the end of the day.
That is why as part of our microloan program, we look for opportunities that not only help the one receiving the loan but create viable employment for others. We want to help people who value employing people at a living wage so their families can thrive.
